18 Bible Affirmations for Grief and the Long Part Nobody Warns You About

For the months after the casseroles stop and everyone else has gone back to normal.

The first two weeks of grief have a shape. People come, food arrives, there are arrangements to make and things to be decided. What nobody prepares you for is month four, when the calls have stopped, everyone assumes you are through it, and you are standing in a supermarket aisle crying about a brand of biscuits.

If you have been told that strong faith means moving through this quickly, that is not what scripture models. The Bible spends an enormous amount of time in grief and never once rushes anyone out of it.

Jesus wept.

John 11:35 · BSB

The shortest verse in the Bible is Jesus crying

He is on His way to raise Lazarus. He knows how the next hour ends. He weeps anyway, standing with the sisters in front of the tomb, and the people watching remark on how much He must have loved him.

That detail undoes a lot of bad theology about grief. Knowing that resurrection is coming did not make the sorrow inappropriate or premature. Tears and faith were doing the same thing at the same time, in the same person.

On the days none of it lands

There will be mornings when you read Revelation 21:4 about every tear being wiped away and feel nothing, or feel angry. That is allowed, and it is not a sign your faith is failing.

Roughly a third of the psalms are laments. Several argue with God. Psalm 88 ends in the dark with no resolution at all, and it was kept in the book anyway. The honest move on those days is to say the complaint first, in full, and then say the verse. Not because the feeling has changed, but because the fact has not.

Grief also does not move in a line. A good week followed by a terrible one is not you going backwards. It is what grief does.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Bible say about grief?

It treats grief as expected rather than as a failure of faith. Matthew 5:4 calls those who mourn blessed and promises comfort, Psalm 34:18 places God near to the brokenhearted, and John 11:35 shows Jesus weeping at a graveside even though He knew what was about to happen.

Is it wrong to be angry at God after a loss?

Scripture is full of people doing exactly that. The lament psalms complain, question and accuse, and they were preserved as prayer rather than edited out. Honesty appears to be more welcome than composure.

How long does grief last?

There is no schedule, and anyone offering one is guessing. Grief tends to come in waves that space out over time rather than shrinking steadily. If you are unable to function months later, or you are having thoughts of harming yourself, please speak to a doctor or a grief counsellor.
